A Little DIY - Failed Attempt #1

I made a little trip to the States yesterday with my mother, and knew that before I left I had to visit the Dollar Tree after seeing this DIY here.

I was not impressed by the Dollar Tree but quickly we were in and out with what I needed to make my hurricane vases. Here's how I did it.

Set out all of your materials, you will need some sort of glue to adhere materials together. I found some super glue at the dollar store that says it will adhere ceramic to one another - so I thought I would give it a whirl.

I put a thin but nice coat all over the rim of the tapered candle stick holder, then flipped it over and placed in on the hurricane bottom. To ensure I got a nice seal, I placed a heavy book on top. I did this for all three.

Then I let them sit for a bit, and took the book off. Once I went to turn it over ..... snap. The bottom came right off. FAIL! They never broke (thank God!) So it looks like I will be going to get some stronger glue! I should have known this crappy Dollar Store glue wouldn't work - but you live and learn. Below is a picture of what the candle stick holder looked like when it came off. No chips, just glue residue. Thankfully I was able to get all of the excess glue off of the bottom of the glass vases. Will attempt again hopefully tomorrow!

This Just In.

I came home on my lunch to find a nice large manila envelope waiting for me! My ottoman fabric has arrived! Well at least I had hoped I liked it enough to be my ottoman fabric.

I opened it up and found two yards of this fabric ...

The designer is Michael Miller and the fabric is Henna Garden in the colour Speckle, and I must admit, I'm in love with this little circle part of the fabric ...

The fabric is light cafe colour with cream branch thingy's (technical term haha!). I think it will work, however while waiting for this to arrive I have been browsing more! Anyways once I get the go ahead for the ottoman assembly I will post pictures!

Rollin' Rollin' Rollin' ...

As I mentioned in a past post - I'm trying to complete Alexis' playroom. I figure with Christmas just right around the corner we need a place to put all of Alexis' "stuff". Tonight I got my roll on! I must say this was the easiest painting experience to date in this house! It was so easy to just slap on the paint and keep rollin' it around!

Again, this colour turns out blueish in these pictures but it's a deep purple. I really am liking it, and like I said it was super easy. I think I would be tempted just to paint the floors in the junky man room! I mean look at that room ... yikes!

Whoa that's scary. It really doesn't look like this alllll the time ... just since I had to move all of the playroom crap in there. Anyways, I will post some pictures of the finished floor when I'm done.

What's That You Say?

There is something wrong with this picture. Can you see it?

Take another look ...

That's right. I have a toilet sitting in my family room.  Not the place I like to see it, but its waiting to go to its future home. We took advantage of the Lowe's sales this weekend and bought two new energy efficient toilets (Derek was really excited!). As of right now both of these babies are in, and are working great. Guess we will see if they make a difference on our water bills.

But until we get a chance to get rid of the old ones ... they continue to "live" in the family room. Derek tells me he's getting rid of them this week ... we shall see.

This is one of the two that is living in the family room ... the other one is outside on the lawn ... classy eh?

Remember when I posted this? I know I know ... it was awhile ago ( I was reminded today - thanks Soph). But I haven't forgotten about this little project, in all honestly I just haven't had the time yet. So the can of paint has sat there in the same spot since I took this pretty much. But tonight I got all ready to tackle it again. Once our little one heads to bed I have big plans to get my roll on and get it done! I can't wait for this room to be finished so Alexis has a place to go to play. She loves coming down to her playroom - it's sort of a treat for her, as she doesn't venture downstairs too much (we usually just play with her upstairs). So when she does go down there she ooouuu's and ahhhhh's, it's quite cute!

So I will be posting pictures soon for the "big reveal" ... or lack there of ... I know everyone is excited to see my painted concrete floor haha!

Another Great Idea

Here is another great DIY hurricane idea from the 320 Sycamore Blog!

The glass bottom part that she has glued to the vase can be found at our local Dollar Stores, as I showed them here when I stumbled across them ...

I just may try these DIY hurricane's after all ... they seem quite simple! To see the step by step tutorial click here to visit 320 Sycamore Blog.

Great Idea!

I recently stumbled across this new blog, and her idea to copy an very expensive hurricane candle using nothing but dollar store finds really had me intrigued! She did a great job and the end result is stunning! Now only if our dollar store had some of these great finds! I do think however that you could just buy a inexpensive glass vase from anywhere (Michael's, Walmart, Dollar Store, Homesense, Winners) and then look for cheap glass candle stick holders at somewhere like Goodwill (I've seen tonnes there and they are very cheap!) and replicate this look. Here are some pictures from her tutorial, and I will post the complete link at the bottom in case you want to see it all!

Here is what she came up with using things from the Dollar Tree (Equivalent to Dollar Store here in Canada)

I love them ... and want to make a bunch! Here is the link to the blog - Visit 320 Sycamore Blog Here
